UNISON the public service union

Most people join a union because they want protection at work - help with pay and conditions of service, legal or health and safety advice or representation in case things go wrong at work.

That's what we're here for. UNISON negotiates on pay and working conditions at every level - local, regional and national. But we also do a lot more. Being a UNISON member gives you a range of benefits and unbeatable deals.

How UNISON works

Every member of UNISON belongs to a local branch which is made up of people working for the same employer. Local stewards are there to represent you at work and help find the answers to your problems. They are volunteers and play a vital role in recruiting new members and organising your branch. If you have a problem, talk to your local steward. If they can't handle the problem on their own, they can talk to other branch officers or full - time union experts on your behalf.

Anyone can face problems at work sometimes but if you are a member of UNISON, you don't have to face them alone. We can provide advice or representation on things like pay, rotas, leave and sickness procedures. We are also there to help you make sure your workplace is healthy and safe, support you in case of disciplinary action, dismissals or redundancy.

Branches Every member of UNISON belongs to a local branch which is made up of people working for the same employer or sometimes working for the company which is used by the main employer. Your branch brings you together with other employees who face common issues in the workplace. Branches enable you to get support from the union, work with your colleagues and make your views felt in UNISON. Find your branch

RegionsUNISON branches are grouped into 12 regions which cover the UK. Each region has its own head office and a regional council made up of delegates from all branches in the region. The regional council develops policies and puts them into action regionally. It's the main link between neighbouring branches and between branches and UNISON's national executive council. Contact us

General Political Fund The General Political Fund (GPF) was set up to allow the union to collect money from members specifically to fund political campaigning work. It is not affiliated to any political party, but the money in the fund is used to support local campaigns, to give a boost to our big national political campaigns, and to pay for political advertising. Nationally UNISON members elect national representatives to work on their behalf. UNISON's elected general secretary Dave Prentis works full time for the union as does deputy general secretary Keith Sonnet. Our presidential team are elected members of the national executive council. Find out more about the structures in UNISON

Labour Link UNISON members have a very direct way of getting their message across to politicians - through political lobbying. When you join UNISON you are given the opportunity to opt in to what we call the UNISON Labour Link (formerly known as the Affiliated Political Fund or APF). Your contributions to this fund help to facilitate our lobbying within the Labour Party. More on Labour Link

Why join a UNISON? As well as the traditional reasons to join a union, UNISON addresses discrimination, offers training opportunities and negotiates agreements that improve many areas of members' lives. And yet UNISON contributions represent only about half a percent of a worker's earnings. Join UNISON
